The WFAS standard is not limited to capture and deep-freezing on board. It also incorporates good practice requirements to reinforce confidence in the origin and operating methods of the certified fleet.

These good practices must be demonstrable through evidence and are reviewed as part of the certification and monitoring audit process.

Good practices in fishing

Combating IUU fishing and minimizing bycatch.

The certified fleet must implement verifiable measures aimed at preventing illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing and reducing bycatch.

  • Self-monitoring of fishing activity: observers (human or electronic) and verification on land by a control body.
  • Improvement of selectivity: participation in projects, initiatives, or campaigns.
  • Training: own plan or participation in training activities; at least the skipper/captain must have training in fishery resources and awareness of the impact on the marine environment.

Good practices for the product

Process treatment and traceability

To support food safety and traceability, the certified vessel must have internal documentation and procedures in place.

  • HACCP manual and management system.
  • Guide to Good Hygiene Practices for freezer vessels.
  • Official certificate for the entry into the European Union of fishery products intended for human consumption (Implementing Regulation (EU) 2020/2235).
  • Authorization and registration of vessels in the general health registry of food companies and foods.

Good social practices

Commitment to social sustainability

WFAS incorporates references to good social practices. To this end, certified ships undertake requirements related to working conditions and labor rights, in line with ILO Convention 188.

  • Minimum age for employment.
  • Prior medical examination.
  • Written employment contract.
  • Wage conditions in accordance with applicable frameworks.
  • Rest hours.
  • Contract duration and breaks.
  • Minimum crew complement.
  • Management of illness, injury, or death.
  • Repatriation.
  • Medical care on board.
  • Occupational risk prevention.
  • Social security.
