Wild & Frozen at Sea with Responsible Fishing

A new label to differentiate wild fish that is deep-frozen on board.

Ideal for those looking for high-quality frozen wild fish with traceability. WFAS identifies fish and seafood caught in the wild and deep-frozen on board following a standard process and control. Rapid freezing is carried out using on-board equipment (tunnels or cabinets) and the process is complete when the product reaches −18°C or below at its core.

How to join WFAS

WFAS is open to trading companies, shipowners, and freezer vessels that want to certify their onboard operations.

For a product to display the WFAS seal (e.g., on packaging or in e-commerce), there must be a chain of custody, and the seal must be displayed with its chain of custody code.

The WFAS logo can be used in corporate media (website, catalogs, press) to explain the certification.

The deep-freezing process on board

After being caught, the product is sorted, cleaned, and gutted. It is then placed in freezing tunnels or cabinets at temperatures typically between −40 °C and −30 °C for a period of between 2 and 8 hours, depending on the species, volume, and equipment.

Quick freezing is considered complete when the center of the product reaches −18 °C or below. Once deep-frozen, it is stored in the hold at an approximate temperature of −25 °C until unloading.

Why choose WFAS-certified products?

Wild & Frozen

Responsible fishing. Responsible purchasing.

WFAS certifies vessels under a common standard for key processes such as freezing, stowage, unloading, and labeling, and verifies good practices in responsible fishing.

In addition, the chain of custody helps to ensure product traceability and prevent mixing or substitution with non-certified products throughout the chain.
